SWAMP RADIO – a guided tour through the swamp.
Sound installations by Ivo TAURINS, Krista DINTERE, Chelsea POLK, and the students from Liepaja University’s MPLab (Art Research Lab) and MIT Art, Culture and Technology program, in collaboration with Swamp Pavilion (swamp.lt), curated by Nomeda and Gediminas URBONAS in the Venice Architecture Biennale.

* Artistic and Curatorial Statement

Project takes a challenge to give a voice to many those unheard, and invisible. In a time when our planet is threatened by climate change, real and hybrid wars, the swamps represent contemporary oasis. These vast wetlands with their ancient ecosystems are like time-capsules. Yet swamps are also key players for serving variety of ecological services for our modern society.

Swamps contain dormant resources and myriad other species, with whom we share life on this planet. Escaping from intensive agriculture, these wetlands contain enormous biodiversity. Swamps are inhabited by numerous of plant and animal species, and various communities of living micro-organisms.

Swamp Radio gets beyond our anthropocenic reality, and maintains connections between the humans and other species. By artistic interventions and transmitting interfaces, the Swamp Radio is turned into a social media megaphone for invisible and inaudible actors of nature. The artists are installing microbial fuel cells, environmental monitoring sensors and transmitting devices to transform the swamps into dynamic power plants and the 21st century multi-voiced broadcast media.

In Spring 2018 Swamp Radio will be expanding its activities in Boston area. The artists Smite and Smits together with their students at MIT ACT will be exploring the marshes and water reservoirs in Boston area, collaborating with Tidmarsh Living Observatory and making field recordings and collecting data from the marshland ecosystems. The collaborative sound interpretations will be created as a part of the Sound class – EXPANDED FIELD RADIO AND ACOUSTIC IMMERSIONS, and presented in the programme of CAVS 50th anniversary in the MIT in April 2018. The installation was on view in MIT CTP from April 25 – May 6, 2018.

The broader live manifestation of Swamp Radio took place in Venice, May 21 – 27, 2018. Venice event will be involving various international sound artists, as well as the invisible actors of nature, living in the wetlands of Venice. Live transmission platform and outdoor installation will be set up in Venice in collaboration with MIT ACT and Lithuanian National Pavillion. Swamp Radio in Venice facilitated artistic interventions, live transmission, sound art performances, field recording sessions, workshops, lectures and artist presentations. Currently Biotricity-Swamp Radio, the live installation by Rasa and Raitis –  is on display in Swamp Pavilion until November 25, 2018, curated by Gediminas and Nomeda Urbonas.

Swamp Radio VR environments also is currently installed in Eco-Visionaries exhibition in HeK, Basel, Switzerland, until November 20, 2018.

An important part of Swamp Radio project is Swamp Radio Program and Walks, curated by Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits, involving the students from Liepaja Univeristy MPLab and MIT ACT.

The SWAMP RADIO WALK in the Kemeri bog took place in the close of RIXC Global Control conference, on September 15, 2018, where the walk through the sound installations was organised by Rasa and Raitis.

Humans are the main creators of urban sound landscape. Being in constant movement and interaction with others, surrounding environment and its objects – unique compositions are created. Daily imagining our trajectory, we participate in the creation of the world. We are in constant exchange of energy. Microphonie explores granular synthesis, arranging sound objects into musical composition, using randomness, to be precise, human movements and presence in urban space. The human activity in environment is recorded with sensors and used as the main impulses for sound object activation.  

Clear Ice is Black Ice,

Clear Ice is Black Ice reflects on multidisciplinary practice and site-specificity through a narration on varying content—the hydrology of wetlands, cryptology, and the history of a site. Initially installed at Fresh Pond, a reservoir in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the audio additionally contains field recordings and compositions for cello based on a musical cryptogram of F-R-E-S-H, translating letters to notes. Transported to Kemeri Bog in Riga, the installation redefines site-specificity as a practice of temporality and transition.

“Burtnieku skaņas” 6:30m (2018)

In the year of the Latvian Centenary the question of national origins has been brought to our attention. One of the subjects mentioned has been the myth about the “Gaismas pils” (The Castle of  Light), that lays on the bottom of the Burtnieks lake. In the composition “Burtnieku skaņas” (Burtnieks sounds) you can hear a reference to this myth. The base of the composition are specific staged sounds, that have been recorded in customized sound studio of National Radio of Latvia and in a field near the Burtnieks lake. The result of editing electronic sound is imaginary Burtnieki region sound landscape composition, that consists of 8 sound channels. In the recording of voice the fragments of poem “Gaismas pils” (The Castle of Light) (1873) by Auseklis (real name Miķelis Krogzemis) are used.

“Purva radio” (Swamp radio) – a collaborative sound composition that explores the relationship between the factuality of field recordings and the fictional sound space, that is created by transmitting this sound through modular synthesizer. Created for RIXC project “Swamp Radio 2018”.

“Binaurālās ainas” (Binaural scenes) is a collective experiment of human sound perception, where lead by artist Krista Dintere students from Liepāja University and Liepāja highschool of Art, Music and Design.  During the “Binaural sound” workshop in “iWeek” they were creating a selection of sound composition.
